Is your year 5 child ready for the 11plus exams?
Do they have a secure knowledge of their times tables?
Do they read a wide range of books?
Are they working at the expected level or exceeding the expected level at school?
Do they play an instrument?
Do they have a wide vocabulary?
The more of the above that you can answer, the better chance of success but contact us if you have any question and I will give you my honest opinion after they complete an assessment.
Your child will complete a diagnostic assessment obased on year 5 and year 6 maths. This is for me to get the chance to pick up any gaps or weaknesses in their knowledge. Once the areas of weaknesses has been identified, we will begin working through them as soon as possible. This will be in the form of worksheets/photocopies but may also include some online learning.
VR & NVR
The National Curriculum does not cover Verbal Reasoning or Non-Verbal Reasoning so your child will need to be taught the basic techniques for both. They will also need to get used to the length of time that they have for each test so I will provide mock exams that they will sit in small groups.
Your child will need a diagnostic test to check for any weaknesses in their grammar, spelling, comprehension and writing. We will then cover as much of this as we can.
Your child will need to purchase the Cadwaladr book (series 1) to help build up their vocabulary in a short period of time. Please check out the recommended resources section for more information on what else is needed
Once your child has covers the basics and has worked through their gaps, the aim is to get them working at speed from the very first paper that they complete and for them to get a clear idea of how long they have to complete the test. I would suggest giving them small rewards for completing papers and lots of encouragement, especially as they will be spending a lot of their summer holiday practicing for the exams.
Your child will be given practise papers to complete and we will then go over any mistakes made, any area of difficulty.
and nfamiliar vocabulary. This is the best way to maximises their learning from each paper. The child will not be told their scores but will not be able to move on until every mistake has been corrected.
